“I laid me down and slept; I awaked; for the LORD sustained me.” Psalm 3:5 KJV
Life is full of mysteries and until I was faced with a life-threatening sickness, I used to take a lot of blessings of this life for granted. I thought these were my rights, but I soon realized that in fact these are privileges. To be able to breathe, eat, drink, pass waste, drink, walk around and carry out many other bodily functions normally are indeed a privilege. And hear me, it’s not about how well you take care of yourself or how careful you are. I am not saying be reckless with your life but taking good care of yourself or being careful does not make you immune to the mysteries of this life. *It takes the hand of God to keep one alive*.
Brethren, I have become very thankful for the often-unnoticed blessings of this life, and I count them and name them one by one. “Bless the LORD, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits” Psalm 103:2.
The sermon in most churches today refers to blessings as material possessions: cars, buildings, travelling doors, good jobs and so on. All these are good but what shall it profit a man if he has all these and cannot breathe, eat, drink, pass waste, or have the body function normally?
Genesis 2:7 KJV reads “And the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.” Every inhale and exhale of breath is a gift of God.
People of God, good health and life is a precious gift from God, and it should not be taken for granted. In the book of 2 Kings, when the news came to Hezekiah that he was going to die, he wept bitterly and sought the face of God for his days to be extended. “In those days was Hezekiah sick unto death. And the prophet Isaiah the son of Amoz came to him, and said unto him, thus saith the LORD, set thine house in order; for thou shalt die, and not live.” (2 Kings 20:1). In the end, the Lord healed him and extended his days by 15 years. Hezekiah had everything in terms of possession but that could not guarantee him his health and life.
God bless you all.
